Title: How can the ethnicity of the actor be addressed in rehearsal and performance?
Description: We shall look at practical ways in which the ethnicity of the performer can be addressed in the rehearsal room. This may lead us to address wider cultural and political questions as to why it should be addressed and how might this impact on issues such as representation, authenticity and identity.

Would those attending the seminar on Friday 16 April please bring a photograph – that is personal and important to them -as an object which we will work with in the session.

Yesterday February 18th 7:00pm there was a great evening of readings and performances called WRITE NOW held at Stratford Circus. Initiated by The Writing Centre and IPAD of UEL and moderated by Mark Hunter, the panel included staff and students from UEL contemporary writing practice subject area. This included readings and performances from: Tim Atkins, Tessa McWatt, and Mark O’Thomas.

There is also a monthly seminar series entitled Imaging Migration being held in Matrix East (see Seminars>Imaging Migration) in which a number of us are contributing as practitioners exploring ways in which we create, think about, imagine and represent the migratory experience  – a global phenomenon deeply effecting each of our everyday experience.

IPAD and SmartLab continue their research seminars this semester.

Another opportunity to share ideas, look at best practice from other universities, and generally come up with a good level of support to PhD researchers creating work in the School in Semester B 2009_10.

Most of you are already involved in presenting either as part of IPAD’s events or Matrix’s screenings, so this meeting is to discuss any other info you might need and to feedback information about Research in the School.

IFTR Symposium

For those of you interested, Node is a network of artists and curators interested in promoting, exhibiting, and making media arts in London.

This next meeting is hosted by Max Schleser – who used to work and study here at UEL, now working at Limkokwing University, London – and recently finished his Phd at Westminster.

The next node.london meeting is scheduled to be held on the 9th November 09 at
the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, London Campus.

around themes of urban sound, networked sound, locative media and
acoustic ecology – the relationship between living beings and their
environment, as mediated by sound. Featuring Furtherfield (Ruth Catlow
and Marc Garrett), and guest speakers Stanza, Peter Cusack, Ximena
Alarcón and Pedro Rebelo.

The event is free, and open to anyone interested, including musicians,

We are looking for three kinds of involvement from PhD students and staff:

1) All those currently registered for MPhil/PhD in the School are invited to submit papers for consideration.  Papers need not be completed articles but may be accounts of research in progress.  The word limit should normally be about 5,000 words. (Shorter submissions will be considered).

Submit synopses of about 150 words to d.m.robbins@uel.ac.uk by the end of November, 2009

2) Those students currently registered for PhD in the School are also invited to offer to review recent publications in their fields, particularly those produced by staff or ex-students of the School.  You are invited to submit details of the text you would like to review to m.tamboukou@uel.ac.uk by the end of November.

3) We are inviting all PhD students and all staff of the School to offer themselves as potential reviewers of contributions since all contributions to Crossing Conceptual Boundaries, 2 are reviewed.

If you are interested in acting as a reviewer, please send an e-mail as soon as possible to d.m.robbins@uel.ac.uk. We shall also be inviting our ex-PhD students to become involved in this process.

I don’t know whether this post fits to the theme of the blog… but just wanted to make the platform familiar to me, so I’m posting my recent practice. (Thank you for opening up the site Ro!)

I had a small exhibition opening in Second Life a few days ago. It’s commissioned as bigger theme, Kritical SL II (curated by Denise Doyle) at ISEA@Belfast 2009. The conference is in the end of this month, but show opened on 7th of August. (Click the picture to go to SL) I owe alot to Angrybeth, collegue artist here to make stuff. I really would like to learn more about making stuff.

My work, ‘Strangers in the neighbourhood’ starts from the street where I live. I took my bed out of my bedroom to the street, to break the private space and public space within the story I wanted to tell. Hyeseok and Mary’s encounter and their dialogue was an anchor to carry the physicality of the work. My questions about the history and small observations of the meeting became a great part of the work, but it also stems from virtual, imaginary space I was in. My neighbourhood was my stage for unpacking my imaginary narrative. The fact that it is developing in Kriti is especially exciting for me as this is the perfect combination of exploring the virtuality and physicality in a digital environment. This is the mirror image from what I created on my street, but this is also an extension of locality where my characters travel from one place to another. This work has exhibited at Kyunggi Museum of Modern Arts at 2008, entitled ‘lure of lawn’ with a lawn and bed installation.
